Please notify people that our regular organizing meeting is at 10:30 at Cabrini as usual, to be followed by a press conference and lunch/party at 12:30. People should invite their friends to come out and celebrate Carol's victory. At the press conference, we will be releasing some of the details behind Carol's long battle to win her rightful place as LAC president. Thanks! The Coalition to Protect Public Housing will host a celebration at Cabrini Rowhouses, 984 N. Hudson St. at 12:30 p.m. Friday, September 20 of the positive outcome of deliberations by arbitrator Barbara Goodman. In addition to Moore and Steele, the Chicago Housing Authority and the Citizens Information Service, which ran the 2002 CHA election, also submitted briefs as part of the process. Jagielski appointed Goodman, a well-known election lawyer based in Northbrook, arbitrator in June. She communicated her decision to interested parties Thursday, August 1. “I’m pleased by the outcome of the arbitration. This was a fair election process, and I was rightfully declared the winner. I hope Cora Moore will continue on the Working Group and return to the Local Advisory Council so we can get back to work with improving the community,” said Steele, a native and lifelong CHA resident. “We applaud this ruling,” said Steele’s attorney, Bill Wilen of the National Center on Poverty Law. “Upholding the decision of officials at Citizens Information Service to declare Carol Steele winner of the Cabrini Green Local Advisory Council election, she based her decision on fairness and upheld the integrity of the election. Unfortunately, from the moment the polls closed January 22, officials at CHA had seen this case as an opportunity to rid themselves of the single most persistent and vocal opponent of the Plan for Transformation, Carol Steele. We are pleased Goodman disregarded their pressures and saw fit to treat this election the same as the others that took place at public housing communities around the city January 22.” The Coalition to Protect Public Housing is a six-year-old alliance of public housing tenants with members from virtually every development in Chicago and supporters such as the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless, Community Renewal Society, Jewish Council on Urban Affairs, Metropolitan Tenants Organization, and other groups. -30- __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
